William John Charles CBE (1931–2004), affectionately known as "The Gentle Giant", is celebrated as one of Wales' greatest all-round footballers. Renowned for his exceptional versatility, Charles excelled as both a centre-forward and a centre-back. His career spanned prestigious clubs including Leeds United, Juventus, Roma, Cardiff City, Hereford United, and Merthyr Tydfil.
Charles’ prowess shone brightly at Leeds United, where he was top scorer in the Second Division in 1954 and later led the team to promotion as captain. His move to Juventus in 1957 marked the peak of his career, where he formed a formidable attacking trio with Giampiero Boniperti and Omar Sívori. During his time in Italy, Charles helped Juventus secure three Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia trophies, earning the capocannoniere title as the league's top scorer in the 1957–58 season.
His sportsmanship and commitment to fair play earned him immense respect, exemplified by his never having been cautioned or sent off throughout his career. Charles also made significant contributions to the Welsh national team, featuring in the 1958 FIFA World Cup and scoring against Hungary before an injury ruled him out of the quarter-final against Brazil.
John Charles' legacy was further cemented when he was named Wales' Golden Player in 2003, celebrating his remarkable impact on football between 1954 and 2003.
