Discover a fascinating piece of British history with this rare Coronation mug commemorating an event that never occurred. Crafted in 1937 by Dame Laura Knight and produced by Burleigh, this mug showcases rich, vibrant colors and intricate design.

In 1936, King Edward VIII shocked the world by abdicating the throne before his scheduled Coronation. The eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, Edward was born on June 23, 1894, and held the title of Prince of Wales from 1910. Despite his royal upbringing and education at prestigious institutions, Edward's reign was short-lived and marked by controversy.

Upon ascending to the throne in January 1936, Edward sought to shorten or forgo his Coronation ceremony altogether. However, the Archbishop of Canterbury insisted on its observance. Before the elaborate preparations could culminate in the coronation, Edward abdicated on December 10, 1936, to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American. His younger brother, Albert, Duke of York, succeeded him as King George VI.

Although Edward's coronation never took place, all arrangements proceeded as planned, and George VI was crowned on May 12, 1937. Edward was granted the title Duke of Windsor and married Mrs. Simpson in France the same year. Despite his brief reign of only 326 days, Edward's actions left an indelible mark on British history.

Today, this Coronation mug serves as a poignant reminder of a tumultuous period in the monarchy, celebrating a coronation that never came to pass.

This mug ranks as the finest Coronation mug ever to be produced, and comes with its original certificate.
