Sir Frank Whittle and Jet Engine Development Team
£950.00
Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle, born on 1 June 1907, was a pioneering English engineer and inventor, notably recognised for his groundbreaking work in aviation and the development of the turbojet engine. His contributions revolutionised air travel and military aviation, earning him global acclaim.
Born in a modest terraced house in Newcombe Road, Earlsdon, Coventry, Whittle displayed a keen interest in engineering and aviation from a young age. Despite facing initial rejection from the RAF due to physical limitations, his determination to serve in the force led him to overcome obstacles and pursue his passion. Accepted into No. 2 School of Technical Training, he excelled in his studies and practical training, eventually earning a place at Cranwell and graduating as an accomplished pilot.
During his tenure at Cranwell, Whittle conceived the fundamental concepts behind the turbojet engine, a revolutionary breakthrough in aviation technology. His innovative design, patented in 1930, laid the groundwork for the development of jet engines, marking a significant advancement in propulsion systems.
Undeterred by the lack of Air Ministry support, Whittle, along with two retired RAF servicemen, founded Power Jets Ltd to bring his engine to fruition. Despite facing financial constraints, they successfully built a prototype that ran in 1937, garnering official interest and subsequent contracts for further development. However, the immense pressure and setbacks took a toll on Whittle's health, leading to a nervous breakdown in 1940.
Following his retirement from the RAF in 1948, Whittle continued to make invaluable contributions to aviation and engineering. He received knighthood for his pioneering work and went on to serve in advisory roles with prestigious organisations such as BOAC and Bristol Aero Engines. His legacy extended to the United States, where he held positions as a research professor and engineering specialist.
In August 1996, Whittle passed away at his home in Columbia, Maryland, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that continues to shape the field of aviation. His enduring impact on aerospace engineering and innovation earned him a place of honour in history, being ranked number 42 in the BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons in 2002. Whittle's legacy serves as an inspiration to aspiring engineers and aviators worldwide, embodying the spirit of innovation and perseverance.
